Coach Terry: Building community and character

Coach Terry: Building Community and Character

Each year, Coach Terry Damron is excited to welcome back her players. Having coached with MCSA since 2016, her team consists of players who have – for the most part – been with her for at least two years.

“The siblings play together during practice, our parents enjoy one another’s company, and the players’ friendships extend beyond the season as they attend soccer camp and other events together,” explains the coach, whose daughter says she is never allowed to stop coaching MCSA soccer. “In this busy stage of life, I’m grateful for the opportunity to build real connections with other families.”

With so many returning players, Coach Terry has the unique opportunity to develop her players’ mindset.

“When we win, I coach the players to practice gracious winning: saving the big celebration for our private huddle and making sure our actions aren’t hurtful to our opposing team,” explains Coach Terry.

And when they lose?

“I encourage them to focus on learning, not losing. When you face a team that outperforms you, you have to focus your attention on what you can do better next time. The game you lost is already behind you. There’s no benefit to sitting around feeling bad about it. Look ahead instead.”

It’s easy to see Coach Terry cares about developing her players not just for the sport, but for life.

“Life is a series of wins and losses,” explains the “sometimes silly, sometimes strict” coach. “I hope each of my players walks away better prepared to face life’s challenges with grace and courage.”

Even with the cancellation of the Spring 2020 Season, Coach Terry has found a teaching moment.

“Sportsmanship is, in part, about learning to handle disappointment. No, we can’t meet for practice or games, but you can keep improving just by getting touches on the ball each day. Personally, we’re spending an hour a day in the yard playing 1v1 small-sided games each day. It’s an awesome workout, a much-needed break from indoors, and a great way to connect with your child(ren)!”
