Coach Maegan: Giving Back to Soccer

Coach Maegan Collins finished her first season with MCSA last year, and already she has made a name for herself as a stand-out coach. Coach Maegan’s love for soccer started young and continues to inspire the positive environment she creates for her players today.

“I played soccer from the age of four through the time I graduated high school. I love the sport. Some of my favorite memories are running around playing soccer with my friends or looking at ladybugs and airplanes instead of playing when I was younger,” recalls Coach Maegan. “I want to make sure my girls have those fond memories that they can grow up with, and maybe they'll want to give back to the sport when they are old enough to do so too.”

As she instills a love of soccer in the next generation of youth soccer coaches, Coach Maegan delights in seeing her players grow in skill and passion. Although she was disappointed with the announcement of the cancellation of the Spring 2020 Season, Coach Maegan is confident the players will return with even more enthusiasm next season.

“Their excitement for the game is infectious. Seeing them progress and apply what they've learned throughout the season brings a huge smile to my face.”

As Coach Maegan grows her players’ skills, she too grows as a coach.

“Coaching a group of almost five-year-old players with varied skill levels has taught me the best thing I can do is take everything step by step and be willing to help them through anything, even if that means helping them count to 20,” explains Coach Maegan, who recently took her commitment to coaching one step further through participation in U.S. Soccer’s Grassroots Pathway Coaching Initiative.

“The training has made me more aware of my coaching style,” explains Coach Maegan, who appreciated the opportunity to better herself as a coach and teacher. “I actively practice teaching instead of reprimanding and offer suggestions when necessary.”
