Coach Joel: Finding joy in the game

Soccer enthusiast Joel Diemoz is ready for the Spring 2020 season coaching with Montgomery County Soccer Association. Joel, who has played since age five, shares with his players not only the many fundamental techniques he has learned throughout his athletic career, but also the joy he finds in the game.

“[Soccer is] the joyful expression of the human soul and brings me peace,” says Coach Joel, who uses the sport to center his feelings and mind, bringing an overall happiness to his spirit.

Before he began coaching for MCSA in 2016, Coach Joel was a member of the U.S. Army and served overseas. He fondly recalls using soccer as a means of connecting with citizens of Afghanistan despite the language barrier.

“Once we got on the field and started playing, it didn’t matter what language you spoke. It was just about the game of soccer and that really opened my eyes."

Back stateside, Coach Joel’s MCSA journey has proved equally rewarding.

“The most rewarding thing is teaching players a new skill and for them to successfully utilize it in a game,” he explained, adding he wants each of his players to fall in love with soccer and learn the sport will never let them down.

Here at the start of his fifth year with MCSA, self-proclaimed “softie” Coach Joel is grateful to be able to volunteer season after season for an organization he respects and loves.

“MCSA prioritizes the families involved and always makes it about the kids.”
